The construction of galleries and tunnels has always been one of the most important branches of underground construction work at Universale-Bau AG.

Our mechanical tunnel heading operations started in Ginzling in 1967 with the first modern tunnel-boring machine in Europe. Since then the technique has been used to drive tunnels with diameters ranging from 2.10 metres to an impressive 7.70 metres. The particularly difficult geolocical conditions in the eastern Alps gave us the opportunity to help develop the NATM (Tauern Tunnel) in practice. As conventional tunnel engineering continued to develop, we were able to create tunnels with a crosssection of up to 180 square metres. In our worldwide operations, currently with particular focus on Central Europe and the Far East, we have managed a large number of accomplishments of which we are justifiably proud: the widening of railway tunnels without any interruption to train operations; average tunnel heading rates of 29 metres a day, which we were achieving even 30 years ago; the record for the longest drive from one side (9.8 km, 1967); 104 metres in a single day (1989); and the successful handling of water ingress of more than 1,000 litres per second.

Innovative use of equipment, experienced and motivated workers, lean organisation structure and top quality construction work are the special hallmarks of this business area.
